미주한인사회의 이와같은 발전과정을 경제에 초점을 마추어 체계적으로 분석하고 정리한것이 이 책입니다. 이 책에는 그동안 미주한인사회와 경제를 주제로 연구해 온 29명의 전문가들이 집필한 20편의 연구논문들이 수록되었읍니다. 이 논문들은 거의 모두 한미경제연구소가 밝은미래재단의 후원으로 2006년 1월 로스엔젤레스 에서 개최한 제1회 미주한인경제컨퍼런스에서 발표 토의된 글들입니다. 저자들과 편집진이 몇년동안 공을 들여 갈고 닦아 미주한인 경제와 사회 (Korean American Economy and Community in the 21st Century) 라는 제목으로 이 책을 내놓게 되었읍니다. 이 책에는한국이민들이 로스앤젤레스 다운타운 서쪽변두리에 기울이가고 있던 대도시 빈민지역을 어떻게 오늘의 활기찬 코리아타운으로 만들었고, 샌티스트릿의 조그만 자버마켓을 어떻게 오늘의 세계적 규모의 분포망을 확보한 체인점으로 발전시켰는가, 윌셔블러바드의 오피스 한칸을 임대하여 사업을 하던 이민들이 어떻게 하여 코리아타운 대형 건물들의 대부분을 차지하게 되었는가, 그리고 1세들의 고생과 희생을 배경으로 2세들이 어뗳게 미국사회에서 자리를 잡아가고 있는가 에 대한 이야기가 실려있읍니다. 즉 이 책은 미주한인 경제의 형성과 발전과정, 현황, 미래의 전망에 대한 책입니다.

미주한인사회와 경제를 종합적이고 체계적으로 다룬 최초의 시도로서 출판된 이 책이 앞으로 커뮤니티와 재계, 1세와 2세, 그리고 한국과 미국의 많은 대학에서 귀중한 참고자료로 쓰여질것이라는 것이 저희 저자들과 편집진의 믿음이며 바람입니다.

During the past 50 years, Korea has transformed itself from a war-torn subsistent economy into a world class, leading edge technology-based economy. It is a miracle in the making that started in the late twentieth century and continues to present day. During this period, the Korean community in the United States has grown from an invisible minority of less than 10,000 people to a dynamically growing ethnic community of more than two million. Korean immigrants took up deteriorating sections of large metropolitan areas and made them into burgeoning Koreatowns, exemplified in particular by Los Angeles and New York. Korean merchants who rented corner lots for hamburger stands and wig shops forty years ago are now majority owners of mid-Wilshire high-rises. Korean American businesses are claiming their stake in the mainstream U.S. economy. Korean students excel in secondary schools and colleges. Young Koreans are increasingly visible in sports, arts, music, administration, law, the news media and high tech arenas. The entry of second generation Koreans into mainstream America is akin to a thousand flowers blossoming all at once. These are remarkable achievements for a relatively short history of immigration.

This anthology, Korean American Economy and Community in the 21th Century, is a story of Korean settlement in this country, its plights and its achievements. With a focus on economic and business activities, the book contains an introduction and twenty research articles, with contributions from 29 scholars. It is the outcome of a conference sponsored by the Korean American Economic Development Center (KAEDC), with funding provided by the Bright World Foundation (Balgeun Mirae Jaedahn), which was held in Los Angeles during January 26-28, 2006. The collection explores the present, past and future of the Korean American economy, assessing various problems, solutions, and strategies that might improve various economic activities in the community. The articles cover numerous issues, adopt diverse analytic strategies, and arrive at varied diagnoses and prospects. In one way or another, all address the past history and recent developments of the Korean American economy, its 21st century challenges, and the implications these factors have on community development. They are grouped into five fundamentally interrelated parts; 1) “Historical Trends in the Korean American Economy and Community,” 2) “‘Old’ Industries and Recurrent Themes,” 3) Communal Infrastructure and the Korean American Economy,” 4) “‘New’ Developments in the Korean American Economy and Community: the Globalization and Transnationalization of Korean American Economy and its Community,” and 5) “New Opportunities and Challenges” that the Korean American economy and Community are likely to face in the 21st century.

The articles in this anthology foster a higher understanding of the complex nature of the Korean American socio-economic structure, illustrating the important roles that “Korean Americans” partake in America. The authors have done excellent studies on the essential aspects of the Korean American economy. Presented in a scholarly yet highly readable format, the topics and themes are meant to be accessible to the community at large. In both scope and depth, this work is the first scholarly work of such magnitude, integrating all major aspects of Korean American society and economy. This invaluable book opens a new chapter in Korean American studies, and provides fascinating insight into this particular ethnic American sector.
